Advertising in ChatGPT: claim your place in the conversation

ChatGPT Ads open up a new playing field for online advertising. But what does that actually mean for your brand?

We google. We scroll. And more and more often, we ask ChatGPT.

From looking for inspiration to comparing products and services: AI plays an ever bigger role in how we find information online and make choices.

And wherever people search, opportunities arise for brands. Enter ChatGPT Ads.

1. What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are advertisements that can appear inside ChatGPT when they are relevant to the conversation.

What makes them interesting is the moment they appear. Not somewhere between holiday photos and reels, but while someone is actively asking questions, looking for information or comparing options.

That makes advertising in ChatGPT different from classic Search or Social Ads. A different environment. A different context. New opportunities.

The ads are separate from ChatGPT’s answers and are clearly labelled as sponsored.

2. How does advertising in ChatGPT work?

OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Ads in several markets and keeps building out the options for advertisers. Think of:

  • Different campaign objectives and bidding strategies
  • Geo-targeting and audiences
  • Measuring results and conversions
  • Ads that can take the context and intent of the conversation into account

Or put simply: the principles of online advertising still stand, but the playing field is changing.

3. From keywords to conversations

For us, this may well be the most interesting shift.

With Search Ads you quickly think in keywords. With Social Ads a lot revolves around attention and interests. With ChatGPT advertising, the context of a conversation comes on top.

A user explains what they are looking for, asks follow-up questions and compares options. As a brand, that means thinking even harder about when your message is relevant.

Not: how do we get our ad in front of as many people as possible? But: at which moment can we really add something?

4. And what about privacy?

A fair question.

OpenAI states that conversations stay private from advertisers and that user data is not sold to them. Ads are also separate from ChatGPT’s answers.

So you are not buying a recommendation from ChatGPT. You are buying ad space around a relevant moment. And that distinction matters.
